Tools & Materials Needed for Water Heater Drain Valve Replacement
Before you begin, gather the following:
- New full-port drain valve
- Teflon tape
- Pipe thread sealant (pipe dope)
- Channel locks or adjustable wrench
- Hose
- Rag for cleanup
Step 1: Shut Off and Drain the Water Heater
Before removing the old valve:
- Turn off power or gas to the water heater
- Shut off the cold water supply
- Drain the tank completely
- Disconnect the hose
This is the safest and easiest way to complete the replacement.
Step 2: Prepare the New Valve
Wrap the threads with Teflon tape. A helpful tip is to hold your finger on the backside of the tape when starting the first wrap so it catches securely.
After taping, apply pipe thread sealant over the threads. It doesn’t need to look perfect – you can clean it up afterward.
Step 3: Remove the Old Valve
Using channel locks or a wrench, slowly loosen and remove the old drain valve.
Keep in mind: even after draining, a little water may still come out. That’s normal.
Once removed, you’ll often notice how small and restrictive the original opening is.
Step 4: Install the New Full-Port Valve
Thread the new valve in by hand first. Once seated, use your wrench or channel locks to snug it down securely. You don’t need to overtighten – just make sure it is secure and properly aligned.
Step 5: Reconnect Hose and Clean Up
Reconnect your hose, wipe off any excess pipe dope, and make sure everything looks clean and professional. Your upgraded valve is now ready for future flushes.
